Summer 2013: Keeping your electric bill low

Summer is approaching and with it, an increase in electric bills for many of us. Here are some ideas to help reduce your summer electric bill.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to cool your house on your schedule. You’ll never have to worry about forgetting to change the thermostat setting before you leave the house for work.
  • Swap your incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs for an immediate savings on your electric bill.
  • Check for leaks. Caulk around doors and windows to plug leaks where air is escaping and make sure the chimney flue is closed.
  • Tint your windows or buy solar screens to reduce the amount of heat and glare that comes into your house during hot summer days.
  • Some electric companies offer payment plans so customers have equal payments all year. See if your electric company offers a payment plan.
  • Make sure your air conditioning unit is working as efficiently as possible with an air conditioning checkup. Close vents in rooms, like the guest bedroom, that you do not use every day.
  • Bake and run the dishwasher at night rather than during the heat of the day.
  • Keep the thermostat set on a higher temperature by dressing for the heat with lightweight, light colored clothing in natural fibers like all cotton.
  • Open up the house at night to allow the night air to cool the house, and then close up the house in the morning before the day heats up.
