Holiday Mayhem Survival Guide

Shopping, gift giving, parties and a house full of family and friends – the holiday season is certainly filled with excitement. If you’re not careful, all the holiday mayhem can lead to financial stress and mental overload. Here’s how to rein in stress and spending so your holiday season stays jolly.

Check your spending. Make a budget and stick to it. Instead of heading to the mall or to big box stores, hit some of the local shops around town. You’ll often find gifts cheaper than you would at larger stores. Also, consider reserving gift giving for immediate family only. Instead of spending your last dime on gifts for friends and coworkers, give them cards or home-baked goodies.

Banish unrealistic expectations. The commercialization of the holidays has given people a warped belief of what the season is “supposed” to look like. Cut yourself some slack and don’t get caught up in the over-the-top holiday hype. Go easy on yourself and keep your expectations realistic.

Put yourself first. Don’t get so busy giving to others that you forget to give to yourself. Take 30 minutes to an hour every day to do something that helps you relax. You can exercise, take a hot bubble bath, watch your favorite show, take a nap or indulge in a book.

Get good insurance. Knowing that your health and home are protected during the holidays gives you peace of mind and allows you to focus on other things.
