A Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great time to reconnect with family, relax, and enjoy delicious food.  But the pressure of the holidays and all the social and gastronomic chaos they bring can cause increased accidents in the home.  Here are a few tips to ensure that you make it through thanksgiving unscathed.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and result in $794 million in damages each year.  To avoid this catastrophe in your own home, never leave the stove on when you leave the kitchen. Additionally, keep flammable items away from the stovetop, and a pot lid handy to smother flames in case of accident.  Check the turkey frequently, and never leave the house while your oven is in use.

Keep little ones and pets out of the kitchen while you are cooking.  You will be carrying hot liquids, sharp knives, and potentially hazardous grease canisters; not things you would want to drop on yourself or someone else.

Keep electric cords from the coffee maker, electric knife, or plate warmer off of counters and out of easy children-reach.
